Mock Cover: Good?

Posted by: Moses Siregar III   in My Work

If I release my novel independently as an ebook and POD book, is this cover is good enough, or should I hire a professional to design a new cover?

p.s. I may drop the “DEUS EX KARMA,” which would free up some room, maybe for a front cover blurb.

I don’t think the red in the title fits but besides that I love it.

Thanks Tania and Leah.

I’ve got someone playing around with blurring (or blending, or something like that) the line between the two images. I think that could make a nice improvement. I may hire a graphics person to play around with the image.

I just updated the post with this:

I think it looks professional enough… It’s fantasy, right? I wouldn’t want a tagline on the cover, I’d gladly go to the back cover for the blurb (I don’t like those short sentences on the covers that are supposed to lure you to the book – the cover does that for me, then I go to the back cover for the rest).
Are you going with Lulu or trying other POD companies? Will keep an eye on the book! 😉

Thanks, Barb. Yep, fantasy. If I publish it myself, and that’s still a big if, then I think I would use Lightning Source for the POD service. Maybe CreateSpace, but Lightning Source seems to be the superior option if you’ve got the ability to put it together for LSI (I don’t yet).

David Farland says fiction writers shouldn’t self-publish… And considering that CreateSpace belongs to Amazon who seems willing to give 70% royalties on e-books for its Kindle, maybe I’d give a second thought about them if I were you! 😉
I’m also on that journey (self-publish or not self-publish? That is the question), so let’s share tips, shall we? 😉

Barb, David Farland has said some pretty positive things about self-publishing recently, but not in his more recent message that you’re referring to. I think for someone with some kind of platform (I have some from my other line of work, mainly), self-publishing is probably a realistic option. J.A. Konrath’s blog is a good thing to follow if you’re interested in that (also Zoe Winters).

Lightning Source is a better option than CreateSpace, for the most part, although CreateSpace is somewhat easier to use if you’re new to this (like me). But LSI will pay better, and you can sell on Amazon using Lightning Source, also; you just have more of a learning curve with LSI, I think.
